Kirk Schulz passed for two touchdowns and led two third-quarter drives that helped Villanova to a 28-25 victory over Rhode Island today as the Yankee Conference opponents played in the first college football game in Italy.
The victory was the fifth in a row for the Wildcats (6-2) and guaranteed them a winning season. They have not finished below .500 since reinstating football in 1985. Rhode Island fell to 2-6 with its fourth straight loss.
In 183-year-old Arena Stadium, where the end zones were only 8 yards deep instead of 10 yards because of soccer and track and field facilities, the Wildcats took control just after halftime.
Trailing, 17-14, the Wildcats took the lead for good with a 1-yard run by Jeff Johnson that capped a 12-play, 54-yard drive. Schulz, Villanova's career passing leader, then put his team ahead by 28-17 with a 4-yard pass to Robert Brady.
