Faccio un bel regalo a tutti gli amici di quei Bengals, ripercorrendo brevemente quei fantastici anni...

Cominciamo con le stagioni 97, 98 e 99

1997
Inizia ufficialmente l'era Coslet che la stagione precedente aveva sostituito in corsa quel cane di Dave Shula rilevando la squadra sull'1-6 e chiudendo l'anno 8-8.
I Bengals hanno Jeff Blake in cabina di regia, Pickens e Scott a ricevere, ed un rookie di nome Corey Dillon a correre. Sono dei Bengals bruttissimi che, nonostante una delle coppie di WRs più forti della propria storia, non sanno far altro che correre, annoiare e perdere.
Si passa ad una 3-4 e Dan Wilkinson (DT, prima scelta assoluta nella storia dei bengals nel 1994) è convertito DE.  Viene promosso titolare un NT draftato al 6th giro dai Bengals nel 1994: il suo nome è Kimo von Oelhoffen.
Dopo 11 partite (3-8, con 7 sconfitte consecutive) Blake viene messo out ed accade la cosa più bella di quegli anni quando Boomer Esiason viene chiamato a terminare la stagione (e la carriera) guidando i Benglas nelle ultime 5 partite. Il fenomeno guida la squadra a 4 vittorie nelle ultime 5 partite, lanciando per 1578 yds con 13 TDs ed un rating di 106.9. L'ultimo gioco della sua carriera durata 14 stagioni è un TD pass da 77 yds per Darnay Scott nel match vinto 16-14 contro Baltimore.
I Bengals chiudono la stagione 7-9 (penultimi nella AFC Central a 5 squadre) e Dillon corre per 1129 yds segnando 10 TDs.
Nessuno giocatore è meritevole del Pro Bowl.

1988
In off-season esplode il caso Dan Wilkinson in rotta sia con la società (rea di avergli applicato il franchise tag) sia con la città di Cincinnati (accusata apertamente di razzismo). Inevitabile, seppur dolorosa, la cessione che avviene, destinazione Redskins, in cambio della 17ma e della 78ma scelta assoluta, durante il mese di febbraio.
Con le due scelte del primo giro i Bengals selezionano due LBs: Takeo Spikes (13ma) e Brian Simmons (17ma).
La difesa ne beneficia immediatamente permettendo ai Bengals di collezionare la bellezza di 3 sole vittorie in 16 partite.
Sono dei Bengals bruttissimi che segnano pochissimo e concedono moltissimo. Si lancia di più, si corre di meno, si perde come al solito...
Quell'anno il QB titolare è O'Donnell (343 Att, 212 Comp, 2216 Yds, 61.8 Pct, 15 TD, 4 Int, con un sorprendente 90.2 di rating), i WR sono sempre Pickens e Scott (1840 yds e 12 TDs in due) ed a correre c'è sempre Dillon (1130 yds corse con solo 4 TDs).
Uno dei pochi momenti da ricordare della stagione avviene alla 5a giornata quando i Bengals (1-3) affrontano gli Steelers (3-1) ed O'Donnell lancia il TD pass della vittoria (25 yds per Pickens) a 20 secondi dalla fine della partita.
Come detto, chiudiamo la stagione 3-13 (5th nell'AFC Central).
Nessun giocatore è selezionato per il Pro Bowl.
Cominciano i lavori per la costruzione del Paul Brown Stadium.

1999
La stagione 99 si apre con una delle più grosse disgrazie della storia dei Bengals: la scelta di Akili Smith da parte di Coslet e Brown.
Al draft i Bengals hanno la 3a scelta assoluta ma la beffa delle beffe arriva a draft terminato quando si scopre che Cincinnati ha rifiutato ben 9 scelte (tra 6 nel draft in corso e 3 per l'anno successivo) offerte dai Saints di  Mike Ditka per mettere le mani su Ricky Williams.
Così noi scegliamo Smith come programmato ma già qualche giorno dopo il ragazzo è fuori squadra a causa di dispute contrattuali.
Si punta nuovamente su Blake. I WRs sono sempre i suoi amati Pickens e Scott e Dillon è lo starting RB.
La stagione è un disastro, i Bengals la chiudono 4-12 (5th nella AFC Central a 6 squadre) dopo essere stati 1-11 nelle prime 12 partite.
Smith gioca 5 partite: 153 Att, 80 Comp, 805 Yds, 52.3 Pct, 2 TD, 6 Int con un bel 55.6 di rating.
Pickens e Scott collezionano 1759 yds e 13 TDs.
Dillon si conquista la prima meritatissima convocazione al Pro Bowl con una stagione da 1200 yds, una media di 4.6 yds a portata e 5 TDs.
Al Pro Bowl gli fa compagnia il KR Tremain Mack dopo una stagione a 27.1 yds di media ed un TD da 99 yds.

Verissimo che sia ai Jets che ai Cardinals non era lo stesso Boomer degli anni '80 però fece delle stagioni più che dignitose. L'anno peggiore lo ebbe nel 92, la prima stagione di Shula ma quelli erano dei Bengals alla fine di un ciclo allenati da un somaro. L'anno dopo andò ai Jets mentre i Bengals con Klingler in regia persero le prime 10 partite della stagione.
La sua storia però non finì in Arizona. Come ho scritto, la carriera di Boomer finì nel 1997 proprio a Cincinnati ed ebbe un epilogo glorioso.

anche se a fine carriera e voglioso di anello quando ha lasciato cinci per andare ai pats con i quali poi ha vinto il titolo ci rimasi molto male.....era il mio giocatore preferito, anche perchè il rb è il mio ruolo preferito..

Il fatto è che dopo avere dichiarato che non avrebbero più scelto gente "problematica" sono stati di parola con la scelta di questo ragazzo che alle spalle ha solo i seguenti precedenti penali:
DUI, Assault, Disturbing the Peace, Probation Violation, Use of alcohol
Il tutto segue la firma della seconda scelta Jerome Simpson il quale, per non essere da meno vanta:

Ponchia, a parte il fatto che la foto del tuo nuovo avatar sembra rubata ad un film porno tedesco dei primi anni ottanta, credo tu abbia postato una stronzata.
Su Purify non mi sono ancora documentato ma ne confermo il passato turbolento.
E' su Jerome Simpson invece che non ci siamo dato che il ragazzo ha la fedina penale linda ed è stato scelto così in alto proprio per l'ottma impressione destata fuori dal campo.
La storia che cerchi di citare riguarda invece Jason Shirley ed io l'avevo postata già il giorno dopo il draft.

The 6-foot-5, 330-pound former Bulldog was suspended for Fresno State's first two games for conduct detrimental to the team.

"That was a team issue, a personal team issue with coaches and teammates. I made a bad decision and it was one of those things that I had to pay for," Shirley said.

Shirley was then arrested after crashing his car into an apartment building Oct. 8.

He was charged with three misdemeanors: hit-and-run, driving under the influence, and driving with a blood-alcohol content of .08 percent or higher, according to The Fresno Bee.

Shirley was suspended from the team for the season, but returned four weeks later when athletic director Thomas Boeh reversed his decision. Shirley had medical documents that showed a concussion he received days before the crash, the Fresno Bee said.

His reprieve didn't last long: Shirley was dismissed from the team almost one month later. He was cited on suspicion of driving with a suspended license and expired tags.

He pleaded not guilty to the two counts of driving under the influence and one count of hit-and-run from October. A jury trial is pending.

"I have a court date May 21. And right now, everything's going kind of smooth. I can't really get into the details about it, as advised to me by my lawyer, but it's going smooth," Shirley said. "It's looking real good, and hopefully I can get that expunged off my record."

Le ipotesi sulla stagione che arriverà io aspetto a farle dato che ci sono ancora troppe incognite da affrontare:
Zimmer e FitzGerald non hanno ancora detto nè come verrà schierata la difesa, nè con quali uomini. Ci sono un sacco di punti interrogativi a cominciare dalla condizioni di Thurman che non gioca da due anni.
Pure in attacco i nodi da sciogliere non sono pochi: la questione Chad, le condizioni di Anderson, il ruolo che avrà Utecht, l'impatto dei WRs draftati, la forma di R. Johnsone e Perry ed altro ancora a cominciare dal possibile inserimento di Alexander.

Proprio qualche giorno fà su bengals.com si affrontava qualcuno di questi temi.

1. LINEBACKERS

Now that No. 1 pick Keith Rivers is written in granite at the WILL for at least the next five years, how do the Bengals line up everybody else?

They appear to still be toying with combinations. Dhani Jones, the team's most experienced backer and designated signal caller, looked to be the WILL before the draft and he has to be on the field someplace at the beginning.

He's not really a SAM, but Ahmad Brooks can be at 270 pounds. So the Bengals can take Brooks out of the middle, put him at SAM and put Jones in the middle.

Right after the draft there had been some thinking that they could put Rivers in the middle and flank him with Brooks and Jones as Odell Thurman learned the WILL behind Jones. But this way, Rivers gets to stay at the spot he played in college and Thurman can stay in the middle, where he nearly won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2005.

But Thurman hasn't played in a game since and that will make him Tuesday's lead storyline. After two years of being on the shelf, just how far away is he going to look?

This is also the first time the Bengals line up without Landon Johnson, gone to free agency and Carolina after he started at least 10 games at each backer spot during his four solid seasons. They don't seem to have anyone like that. The Bengals have either the big names who haven't strung anything together yet, like Rivers, Brooks and Thurman, or young veterans trying to get a foothold in the league like Corey Mays and two pickups from Arizona in Darryl Blackstock and Brandon Johnson.

Tuesday also marks the return of the promising Eric Henderson, whose move from defensive end to SAM last year was cut short by a wrist injury in preseason.

Rivers won't be here this week because of rules preventing rookies from practicing until May 20, but he'll be back at WILL a week from Tuesday.

If the Bengals switched Brooks to SAM, he would be in a dogfight with one of the club's most productive young players in Rashad Jeanty, its most experienced backer with 22 games.

It's unclear who is going to be here for that first workout Tuesday. Jones, on one of his junkets with the Travel Channel, had a hurling match Saturday in Ireland. Thurman is dealing with family matters back in Georgia.

2. RUNNING BACKS

If Thurman is the lead story, then Chris Perry is 1A. Injuries have pretty much kept him out of spring ball since his rookie year of 2004 and he hasn't been in a game since November 2006.

If he's anywhere near the Perry of 2005 as the change-of-space speed back, then this offense gets a huge lift. He lives on quickness and jukes, but the question is how much of that did his severe dislocated ankle rob?

It's also the unveiling of the old/new Rudi Johnson after he limped through a hamstring injury last season that limited him to 2.9 yards per carry. He's been the star of offseason workouts as he packed more muscle into his upper body to get back to at least the body constitution of his two franchise-record seasons in '04 and '05. But is it enough to turn around his yards per carry that has dipped to 3.5 yards since '06?

Last week offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski indicated that the Bengals are going to a rotating back system. Johnson is still the main back, but Kenny Watson and DeDe Dorsey will get at least a series in the first half and maybe more when specialty plays are included.

Kenny Irons, recovering from a preseason ACL injury to his knee, won't be on the field Tuesday, the rest of May, or June. That has all the whiff of the PUP list, which means he wouldn't be seen until October.

The workouts start a week after Shaun Alexander visited his hometown but those discussions don't look to be aggressive. Both sides could be thinking it's not a fit with so many bodies in the backfield. It just seems like one of those free-agent signings before Marvin Lewis showed up in the Vaughn Booker-Richmond Webb-Michael Westbrook mold. Once a top-of-the-line-player at the end.

3. WIDE RECEIVERS

Supposedly the Bengals will be shy a couple of Pro Bowlers, although T.J. Houshmandzadeh said last week he's thinking about participating.

Who lines up in Chad Johnson's spot is going to be story 1AA, and it figures to be Glenn Holt with Antonio Chatman lining up as the third receiver in place of Chris Henry. Or maybe not, but this week will show why the Bengals went out and used three of their 10 draft picks on receivers. Chatman, Holt and Marcus Maxwell have caught just a combined 40 balls from Carson Palmer. Also in the mix is Doug Gabriel, who has much to prove after not playing for a year since two teams let him go.

4. OFFENSIVE LINE

T-Minus two months and counting for the Bengals to get a long-term deal with franchise player Stacy Andrews. Once right tackle Willie Anderson came back at the end of last season, Andrews didn't have a starting position but head coach Marvin Lewis has indicated he'll have to start somewhere this year with that $7.5 million salary.

With Anderson and left tackle Levi Jones apparently healthy, that would seem to mean one of the guard spots. It could be the left side on Tuesday because there are indications Jones won't be here until the June 12-14 mandatory camp and that would put Andrew Whitworth at left tackle and Andrews at left guard.

Jones, miffed at how the Bengals handled his return from a knee injury last season, has asked for a trade. Just two years into his $40 million extension, Jones isn't going to be moved and other indications are he won't sit out.

Lewis is sounding like Anderson, the Bengals dean as he begins his 13th season, is as healthy as he's been the last couple of springs. That's another huge lift for an offense that is re-dedicating this season to running the ball.

5. SECONDARY
 
The Bengals desperately need leadership on defense and these guys seem ready to provide it. They look to be in full transition from a group that continually felt Lewis' wrath while making one-armed tackles and keeping an eye out for two-handed interceptions.

Leading the charge are the bookends from the '07 draft in first pick Leon Hall at cornerback and last pick Chinedum Ndukwe at safety. Johnathan Joseph, the other starting corner, strong safety Dexter Jackson, and Marvin White, the heir apparent to departed free safety Madieu Williams, are also giving the unit a decided edge.

Lewis is looking for more from Jackson and he is giving it to him. There is still talk about Jackson's speech to the rookies the night before the rookie camp.

Third corner Deltha O'Neal didn't participate in most of the spring camps last year, but he responded with a good season and more of the same is expected from him this year.

It's a coming-out party for cornerback David Jones and cornerback-safety Ethan Kilmer. Jones is a fifth-round pick of the Saints last year that the Bengals have been very high on since they picked him up off waivers at the beginning of the season. Kilmer, a safety and special-teams ace in '06, had been moved to learn cornerback in last year's spring ball in an effort to play him in both spots a la Kevin Kaesviharn. He's back after a knee injury wiped out his last season.

By the way, there is no question that defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and linebackers coach Jeff FitzGerald are going to bring an in-your-face tempo to the defensive workouts. At the rookie camp, the pair asserted themselves with their lungs and demands, and the veteran camps should be more of the same.
