“I wouldn’t even anticipate doing it, having that discussion right now,” Belichick said. “What’s going to happen now is we’re going to go through the game plan, players will come in tomorrow, and everyone is going to get ready to play. And that’s how we’re going to approach it. Whoever plays, plays. Whoever doesn’t play, doesn’t play. But it’s like that every week. We could go out there and on the first play of th game something could happen and somebody else could be in there.

“Everyone needs to be ready to go all of the time.”

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Quarterback Tom Brady, G Logan Mankins, WR Wes Welker and NT Vince Wilfork have been selected to represent the New England Patriots and the AFC in the 2010 Pro Bowl on Jan. 31 in South Florida. Mankins and Wilfork were selected as starters, while Brady and Welker were selected as reserves.

It is the fifth Pro Bowl selection for Brady (2001, 2004, 2005 and 2007), and the second for Mankins (2007), Welker (2008) and Wilfork (2007).

Mankins is going to his second Pro Bowl and first since 2007 when he became the first Patriots guard to earn a Pro Bowl selection since 1985 when Pro Football Hall of Famer John Hannah went to his ninth career Pro Bowl. Mankins joins Hannah as the only Patriots guards to earn Pro Bowl bids since the 1970 merger. The Fresno State product is in his fifth season with the Patriots since being selected in the first round (32nd overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft. He has started all 15 games this season and has never missed an NFL game, starting all 79 of his career games. Mankins is part of an offensive line that has allowed only 16 sacks through the first 15 games.

Wilfork earned his second Pro Bowl berth after helping the Patriots enter the final week of the season with the eighth ranked defense. Since being selected in the first round (21st overall) of the 2004 draft out of Miami, Wilfork has helped the Patriots defense finish in the top 10 on four occasions (2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008). Since 2004, the Patriots own a 73-22 (.768) record in the regular season. Wilfork enters the final week of the 2009 season leading the defensive line with 65 total tackles. He had a team-leading 10 total tackles in a key 31-14 AFC East victory over the New York Jets on Nov. 22. Wilfork was selected by his teammates as a defensive captain in 2009 for the second straight season.

Brady enters the final week of the season with 4,212 yards passing and 28 touchdowns. He has thrown for 300 yards seven times, including a streak of five-straight games. It is his third season with over 4,000 yards and his fifth season with 25 or more touchdowns in a season. Brady's five seasons with at least 25 touchdowns are tied with Drew Brees for the fifth-most in NFL history. Brady became the Patriots' all-time leading passer in 2009 and also became the 31st NFL player to reach the 30,000-yard milestone. He was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week twice in 2009 and was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for October.

Welker ranks first in the NFL with 122 receptions in 2009, a Patriots single-season record that eclipses the 112 he had in 2007. Welker broke the 100-reception total for the third straight season after catching 112 passes in 2007 and 111 in 2008. He joins Marvin Harrison (4), Jerry Rice (3), Herman Moore (3) and Brandon Marshall (3) as the only NFL players to catch 100 passes in three consecutive seasons.

Welker also set a career-high with 1,336 yards receiving so far this season. Welker and Randy Moss became the first Patriots players to have three straight 1,000-yard seasons

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots announced today that QB Tom Brady has been named AFC Offensive Player of the Week by the National Football League for his performance in the Patriots' 35-7 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. It is the third time in 2009 that Brady has earned the AFC Offensive Player of the Week honor and the 15th time in his career that he has received the award.

Brady completed 23 of 26 pass attempts for 267 yards with four touchdowns against the Jaguars. He set a Patriots record for best completion percentage in a game by completing 88.5 percent of his passes. Brady has now thrown at least four touchdowns in a game 12 times, including two games in 2009 with four or more touchdowns. It was Brady's seventh game in 2009 with two or more touchdowns and his fourth with three or more. Brady's performance against Jacksonville pushed his season totals to 4,212 yards passing with 28 touchdowns. It is Brady's third season with over 4,000 passing yards, and his fifth season with 25 or more touchdowns.

Brady was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week following Week 1 and Week 6; S Brandon Meriweather was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week following Week 7; K Stephen Gostkowski was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week following Week 9; and CB Leigh Bodden was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week following Week 11. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has been named a finalist for the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week honors for games played on December 25 - 28. Fan are encouraged to cast their vote at www.nfl.com/fedex/

Quarterbacks TOM BRADY of the New England Patriots, JAY CUTLER of the Chicago Bears and PHILIP RIVERS of the San Diego are the finalists for the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week honors for games played on December 25 - 28, while running backs JEROME HARRISON of the Cleveland Browns, JONATHAN STEWART of the Carolina Panthers and CADILLAC WILLIAMS of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the finalists for the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week, the NFL announced today.

Fans can vote for one player in each category on NFL.com/FedEx from 9 a.m. EST on Tuesday through noon EST on Friday to determine the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week. The winners will be announced Friday evening on NFL.com.

Fans will be voting for more than their favorite player. As part of the Air & Ground program, FedEx continues its support of Safe Kids USA - a national non-profit organization that works to prevent accidental injury among children - by making weekly $1,000 donations in the winning players' names. The funding, allocated to local Safe Kids coalitions in that team's city, is used for pedestrian safety improvements throughout the year, from upgraded crosswalks and street signage to traffic barriers and educational training.

For a second season, fans can tune into the "FedEx Air & Ground Lowdown" posted exclusively on NFL.com/FedEx starting Wednesday mornings. The show examines the nominees in the Air & Ground categories through exclusive video highlights and expert analysis. NFL Network's RICH EISEN and MARSHALL FAULK host the weekly five-minute show.

A closer look at the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week finalists:
New England's TOM BRADY threw four touchdowns completing 23 of 26 passes for 267 yards in the Patriots' 35 - 7 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Chicago's JAY CUTLER completed 20 of 35 passes for 273 yards, four touchdowns and an interception against the Vikings on Monday Night Football. Cutler's 39-yard touchdown pass to Devin Aromashodu in overtime lifted the Bears to a 36-30 win.
San Diego's PHILIP RIVERS completed 21 of 27 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns in the Chargers' 42 - 17 win over the Tennessee Titans on NFL Network.

A closer look at the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week finalists:
Cleveland's JEROME HARRISON rushed 39 times for 148 yards and one touchdown in the Browns' 23 - 9 win over the Oakland Raiders.
Carolina's JONATHAN STEWART rushed for 206 yards and one touchdown over 28 carries in the Panthers' 41 - 9 win over the New York Giants.
Tampa Bay's CADILLAC WILLIAMS rushed 24 times for 129 yards and one touchdown in the Buccaneers' 20 - 17 win in overtime over the New Orleans Saints.

As the Official Delivery Service Sponsor of the NFL, Super Bowl and Pro Bowl, FedEx understands the need for a winning game plan, and created the Air & Ground program to highlight superior on-field performance while delivering safe kids off the field. Because FedEx has thousands of delivery trucks out on the roads each day, the company is committed to funding pedestrian safety improvements through its 10-year partnership with Safe Kids USA.

Vince Wilfork heads Bowl quartet
By Ian R. Rapoport

FOXBORO - Nose tackle Vince Wilfork [stats] was overwhelmed last night after being named one of four Patriots [team stats] to the Pro Bowl. But while the AFC starter means no disrespect toward the event, he hopes to be otherwise occupied.

“Wow! Thanks guys. I appreciate so much the support,” Wilfork said via Twitter, moments after the news was announced on the NFL Network. “Getting selected as a starter for the Pro Bowl is huge. I could not have done it without u. Don’t get it twisted. I love the pro bowl, but hope I can’t go because I will be at Super Bowl the next week.”

Time will tell if Wilfork gets his wish, but it is clear that three teammates are slated to join him. Guard Logan Mankins [stats] was named an AFC starter, while quarterback Tom Brady [stats] and receiver Wes Welker are scheduled to come off the bench.

The Pro Bowl is slated for Jan. 31 in Miami, a departure from previous seasons when it took place in Hawaii after the Super Bowl.

Meanwhile, mercurial receiver Randy Moss, who leads the NFL with 13 receiving touchdowns and is seventh with 1,189 yards, was snubbed in favor of Denver’s Brandon Marshall, the Colts’ Reggie Wayne and Houston’s Andre Johnson. Moss missed making his seventh Pro Bowl.

Brady, a backup to Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning, earned his fifth Pro Bowl nod, while Mankins (2007), Welker (2008) and Wilfork (2007) all made the cut for the second time.

Brady has 4,212 yards passing and 28 touchdowns, Mankins has been his usual sturdy self, Welker has 122 catches for 1,336 yards, and Wilfork has 43 tackles.

“Congrats to my teammates Brady, Welker and big Logan,” said Wilfork on his Twitter account, @Wilfork75. “Need the rest of these guys next year: (Randy) Moss, (Jerod) Mayo, (Brandon) Meriweather, (Ty) Warren and others.”

Defense contains high confidence level

FOXBORO - With his finger on the pulse of his players, Patriots [team stats] defensive coordinator Dean Pees has no trouble gauging the unit’s mindset after three stellar performances.

“Guys are gaining some confidence back,” Pees said yesterday. “I think they lost it a little bit there midway in the season. We had a couple rough goes at it and anytime that happens your confidence gets a little bit down. Once you start having some success, that confidence grows.”

The defense has allowed 27 points over the past three games, fewer than any other team in that span. The 888 yards allowed is better than all but two teams over the past three weeks.

The unit received a boost from captain and linebacker Jerod Mayo, who had a whopping 15 tackles - 11 solos - in Sunday’s 35-7 win against Jacksonville. Mayo spent most of the season recovering from a knee injury.

“Whether or not it was his best game, I don’t know,” Pees said. “He’s had some other games where maybe he didn’t have as much production, but maybe because of what he was doing or what we were doing with him, people were devoting more attention to him. We were very happy with the production and want to see that continue.”

Whoever, whenever

A day after simply saying he would “do what’s best for our football team,” coach Bill Belichick offered some hints about whether he would rest Pats starters Sunday in Houston against the Texans. While saying everyone will “get ready to play,” Belichick opened the possibility that some won’t need to be ready.

“Whoever plays, plays,” he said. “Whoever doesn’t play, doesn’t play. It’s like that every week. We could go out there the first play of the game, something could happen. Everybody needs to be ready to go all the time.”

One coach who would benefit from a Houston loss won’t lobby either way.

“I really have no opinion,” Mike Tomlin, coach of 8-7 Pittsburgh, told reporters. “I trust that those coaches are going to do what they feel is best for their football teams. Very rarely do I pass judgment on the decision-making of other coaches.”

Meanwhile, the Pats will scout playoff possibilities.

“We’ll use our resources the best we can,” Belichick said, “and try to do a little bit of preparation work at the end of the week as we normally do for the following week.”

Positive gains

The offense functioned better Sunday than it had in weeks, as quarterback Tom Brady [stats] had just three incompletions while passing for 267 yards and the team ran for 197 yards on 36 carries against the Jaguars.

“There were not many negative plays,” director of player personnel Nick Caserio said. “We had 62 plays. There were only three negative-yardage plays. So when you have positive plays that put yourself in manageable situations, then you’re able to go ahead and execute. Collectively, there were a lot of people that were doing the right things.”

While no one would say so, it’s also possible that quarterback coach Bill O’Brien is finding a rhythm as a play-caller. O’Brien, who declined an interview request this week, took the place of former offensive coordinator and current Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels.

“Once you get into those first few series, you kind of have an idea of what’s going to work, what’s not going to work,” Caserio said. “You call the game accordingly based on how you feel at that point.”

Answer available

After playing in 13 games, rookie cornerback Darius Butler was a healthy scratch against the Jaguars, Belichick said. In Butler’s place, Shawn Springs started, with Jonathan Wilhite working as the third corner.

“We have the players that we have available against the team we’re playing,” Belichick said. “(We measure) how to best match those up individually from a player standpoint and a scheme standpoint; what we’re going to ask our players to do, balance and all that.”
