Vikings CB Chris Cook held without bail for domestic assaultFor the second time this year, and the first time after the lockout, Minnesota Vikings cornerback Chris Cook(notes) has drawn the ire of police. During the NFL's work stoppage, Cook was arrested for brandishing a gun during a bar fight in Virginia. He was acquitted of that charge after a bench trial in May.
Now, the issues are far more serious, as Cook has been arrested in Hennepin County, Minnesota on two counts of domestic assault, and he's being held in the Hennepin County Jail. The news was first reported by Tom Pelissero of 1500 ESPN.com Minnesota based on a couple of Twitter tips from readers.
"The Vikings are aware of the incident involving Chris Cook," the team said in an official statement. "We take this matter very seriously and are still gathering all the details of the incident. We will not have any further comment at this time."
According to Peliserro, Cook can't be released until there is a hearing, and that won't happen until Monday -- his first appearance is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. Monday. So, the Vikings will likely be at least one cornerback short for their Sunday matchup with … oh, dear … Aaron Rodgers(notes) and the Green Bay Packers at Mall of America Field.
And with fellow cornerback Antoine Winfield(notes) listed as doubtful on Friday's injury report (neck), the Vikings could very well be going with a battery of backups against the best quarterback in the NFL. Rodgers might be peppering a defensive backfield featruring Cedric Griffin(notes) and Asher Allen(notes) with Marcus Sherels(notes) as the inevitable nickel back. Safety Jamarca Sanford(notes), who hasn't practiced all week, is also doubtful with what the NFL likes to call "concussion-related symptoms."
In a word, yikes. This situation becomes even more dire for the Vikings when you consider that fact that rookie quarterback Christian Ponder(notes) will be making his first NFL start against the Packers, and Minnesota's offense really isn't set up to outscore anybody for a full game. They've blown multiple first-half leads, their offensive line has seriously regressed, and Donovan McNabb(notes) looked so bad against the Chicago Bears last night, his mom actually beat the traffic out of Soldier Field.
A second-round pick for the Vikings out of Virginia in 2010, Cook suffered multiple knee injuries in his rookie season. He was playing better through the early part of the 2011 season, first playing in the nickel packages and then replacing Winfield at left cornerback as the veteran recovered from the aforementioned neck injury.
