The Vikings certainly punched the Dallas Cowboys in the nose Sunday, but did they rub it in, too?

Brett Favre's touchdown pass to Visanthe Shiancoe was a surprise to nearly everyone in the Metrodome on Sunday, especially in light of how conservative Minnesota had been offensively in the second and third quarters, and the fact that it was fourth and 3 from the Dallas 11-yard line, and the fact that Vikings already were winning 27-3 with 1:55 remaining.

"They get to see us (next season) so you better believe I will have that one circled on the calendar," Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking said. "I say we get paid to stop them, I don't care what's called, but there comes a time. I just think there wasn't much class involved in that decision."

Brooking berated Favre all the way back to the Vikings' sideline.

"Sorry," Shiancoe deadpanned after the game.

When asked if he thought Minnesota ran up the score, Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said, "Yeah, unnecessarily. No, I mean, they have the right to play whatever they want to play."

Asked if he would have done the same thing, Phillips said, "I can't answer that. I wasn't in that position."

Shiancoe wasn't exactly contrite.

"It's fourth down; we had to get a first down," he said. "You never know. They might score four touchdowns. I've seen some crazy stuff happen. I mean, we scored 24 points in one quarter last game against the Giants."

McKinnie handles Ware: No pregame matchup was more

analyzed than the one between Dallas linebacker DeMarcus Ware and Minnesota left tackle Bryant McKinnie. Conventional wisdom among the league's talking heads was that McKinnie had no answer for the 6-foot-4, 260-pound rush specialist.
But Ware finished with one sack, getting to Favre for a nine-yard loss when he broke around the left end unblocked.

Afterward, McKinnie admitted he was tired of hearing about Ware.

"You know I was. Even when you tried to avoid the news, somebody would call you, or it would be on Twitter," he said. "You're trying to avoid it, but people are still trying to bring it to your attention. It just made me focus and buckle down even more.

"I watched them when they played Philly those two times, and I saw some of the stuff he likes to do. I just studied and tried to execute the plan I had."

It worked. Ware finished with a solid eight tackles, but he didn't supply the consistent pressure that was expected to give Favre fits.

"(The media), the guys on ESPN, the announcers, they basically just had us counted out, that we couldn't keep up with Dallas' front seven, and I just felt like they didn't even give us a chance," McKinnie said. "People kind of took it personally a little, just to prove that we were capable of doing it. They said we weren't playing at the same level we were at at midseason."

McKinnie was modest in his postgame assessment, but many of his teammates allowed themselves to gloat after hammering a team many experts had picked to win.

"It's the playoffs. You've got to show up, and we showed up," guard Anthony Herrera said. "All week long the talk was about how Dallas was going to get to Favre with the pass rush and the Vikings better look out. Well, we did what we were supposed to do. And we're moving on."

Even normally stoic coach Brad Childress acknowledged feeling slighted, saying the Cowboys were "about to bombard the State of Minnesota and run through us like Sherman through the South. That was the aura that was left after last weekend's (wild-card) games.

"All of us kind of felt that quite palpably. All of it, and then we'd had about enough of it by Tuesday."

Allen downplays Adams injury: The Vikings seemed to catch a break when Dallas lost left tackle Flozell Adams to a right calf injury in the second quarter, but don't tell that to defensive end Jared Allen.

Adams was containing Allen's right side pretty well before he went down, and on the Cowboys' first series without him, Allen wreaked havoc, forcing a fumble on an eight-yard sack that set up Ryan Longwell's 23-yard field goal for a 17-3 lead.

"Everybody's just funny. I tell you what — he left and it doesn't matter," Allen said. "That's who we're playing. We've got no control over that, but you guys act like that game was out of hand before he left. We were still kicking butt. I mean, they got three points the whole game. It is what it is, I guess."

Johnson bounces back: Vikings rookie Jamarca Sanford saw extensive action against the New York Giants in the regular-season finale in place of starting strong safety Tyrell Johnson, who struggled much of this season with missed tackles.

Sunday, Johnson held down his spot with a stronger performance in run support and pass coverage.

"He had a good rhythm going in there and Jamarca was doing a good job on special teams," Childress said. "We didn't fool with it."

Johnson brushed off criticism about his play this season and the notion that Sanford could be pushing him for playing time.

"For me, I don't let all that stuff get to me because as a professional athlete people are going to talk about you," Johnson said. "If you let that stuff get to you, the NFL is not for you. I don't worry about that. I just do the best I can with my job."

The Vikings will need Johnson to play well again next Sunday against New Orleans' high-powered passing offense.

Briefly: Sunday's 34-3 victory was Minnesota's second-most lopsided playoff win. The 31-point advantage trails only a 44-10 victory over New Orleans in a 1988 wild-card game.

Sidney Rice tied team records for points (18) and touchdowns (3) in a postseason game. Leroy Hoard had three TDs against Arizona on Jan. 10, 1999, and kicker Chuck Nelson had 18 points against San Francisco on Jan. 9, 1988.

:idolo: :idolo: :idolo: :idolo:

Our deal was this: we got a good football team. I told them that all year long,” Childress said. “I heard all that nonsense and all the hype about Dallas Cowboys coming to town, the hottest team in the playoffs. I asked my team early in the week to choke it back and shut up. We will play the game when we get here on Sunday. The game is always won on the football field. I am tickled to death for those guys; I knew they would play their tail off and be able to dispel that myth of (who) was coming to town.”

When asked by a reporter to clarify what he meant by the phrase “choke it back and shut up,” Childress had this to say:

“Just that the Tasmanian Devils that were coming from Dallas that were about to bombard the state of Minnesota and run through us like Sherman through the South. That was the aura that was left after last weekend’s games. All of us kind of felt that quite palpably. All of it, and then we had about enough of it come Tuesday. They did a great job with that. It’s hard to get guys like this to stifle themselves.”
