When Dungy Leaves, Caldwell will be Colts Head Coach, Polian Says
INDIANAPOLIS – The hope throughout the Colts’ organization is that Tony Dungy will be the head coach next season, Club President Bill Polian said Friday.
But if he isn’t, the team knows the identity of its next head coach:
Jim Caldwell.
Caldwell, the Colts’ assistant head coach/quarterbacks the past three seasons and a Colts assistant since 2002, will be the franchise’s next head coach when Dungy decides to retire, Polian said Friday morning.
“It’s important if Tony’s going to leave to have the right guy,” Polian, who recently finished his 10th season as the Colts’ president, said at the Colts’ Practice Facility Friday. “That was clearly Jim, so in that sense, that’s the first and biggest step you take. That’s been done.”
Dungy, who has coached the Colts to six consecutive playoff appearances and five AFC South titles in six seasons as the Colts’ head coach, said this past Monday at his season-ending press conference that he will decide over the weekend whether or not to return next season.
He said he likely will inform Colts Owner and Chief Executive Officer Jim Irsay of his decision Monday.
If Dungy opts not to return, Polian said the succession process is already in place.
