LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears have released veteran defensive tackle Tommie Harris, a three-time Pro Bowl pick who had struggled in recent years because of injuries.

The Bears also released linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer and offensive tackle Kevin Shaffer on Monday.


A Pro Bowl pick from 2005 to 2007, Harris was limited by knee and hamstring problems the past few years and never regained his old disruptive form. He had signed a four-year, $40 million extension in June 2008 and was locked in through 2012, but the Bears decided to cut him loose after several ineffective seasons

Workout con il CB Skrine

Buster Skrine’s stock jumped when the cornerback from Tennessee-Chattanooga ran one of the fastest 40-yard dashes at the Scouting Combine last month. The Chicago Bears went in for a closer look Thursday.

Bears defensive backs coach Jon Hoke put Skrine (pronounced “Screen”) through positional drills at his pro day on campus. The Bears were one of 15 teams present and the Jacksonville Jaguars also sent a position coach, according to a league source.

Skrine ran the 40 in 4.37 seconds in Indianapolis and he stood out on his workout numbers from there, which included a 37-inch vertical jump and 20 reps on the bench press at 225 pounds. Skrine has decent size at 5-9 1/2, 186 pounds. He also posted the fastest time in the 60-yard shuttle in 10.75 seconds.

Skrine was selected All-Southern Conference first team the last two years and projects to be a mid-round selection, perhaps coming off the board in the third round.
