DOLPHINS TO OPEN 2008 SEASON AT HOME AGAINST JETS
MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins will kick off the 43rd season in franchise history at home on Sunday, September 7 when they host the New York Jets at Dolphin Stadium. It will mark the first time in the last three years that the Dolphins have started the regular season at home and fourth occasion they will commence the campaign against the Jets, and the first since 1995.
Following their opener, the Dolphins then go on the road for two in a row, including their inaugural visit to Glendale’s University of Phoenix Stadium to square off with the Cardinals on September 14. A matchup with the defending AFC Champion New England Patriots on September 21 in Foxboro precedes the Dolphins bye week (Sept. 28).
The Dolphins then begin a stretch of six home outings over the next eight weeks, starting with their game immediately following the bye, on October 5 against the San Diego Chargers. During this eight-week period, the only two road ventures the Dolphins will make will be on October 12 at Houston and November 2 at Denver. The span concludes with three consecutive home contests, consisting of matchups against Seattle (Nov. 9), Oakland (Nov. 16) and New England (Nov. 23).
Miami will then make only one appearance at Dolphin Stadium over the final five weeks of the regular season. That will come on December 14 when they host the San Francisco 49ers – a game that is sandwiched between two pairs of consecutive road contests. The first two will be staged indoors, as the Dolphins take on the Rams on November 30 at the Edward Jones Dome. The week afterwards, the Dolphins will play an international game for the second year in a row when they battle the Buffalo Bills at Toronto’s Rogers Centre – the first NFL regular season game to take place in Canada. Last year, the Dolphins took part in the NFL’s first regular season matchup outside of North America when they contested the New York Giants at London’s Wembley Stadium. Road games against the Kansas City Chiefs (Dec. 21) and New York Jets (Dec. 28) will represent just the fourth time in their history that the Dolphins have played their final two regular season games away from home (1993, 1995, 2002).
For the third straight year in 2008, the NFL will implement “flexible scheduling.” Starting on Sunday, November 16, through the end of the season, Sunday afternoon games are subject to being moved to the Sunday night time slot on NBC.
“It’s always been critical to win your divisional games, and that certainly will be true when we start our season, with two of our first three games against teams from the AFC East,” said Dolphins Head Coach Tony Sparano. “And we certainly face a challenge at the end of the year, with four out of our final five games on the road, including an international game against the Bills in Toronto.”
The combined record of the Dolphins’ 13 opponents this year was 92-116 in 2007. Their eight home foes went 62-66, while their eight road opponents posted a mark of 57-71. Of Miami’s 13 opponents this season, three qualified for the playoffs in 2007, for a total of four games against 2007 playoff teams (Patriots twice).
Miami Dolphins 2008 season tickets are now on sale for the team’s ten-game home package (2 preseason, 8 regular season). Club seats also are available. Individual game tickets will go on sale in the near future. For more information, call the Dolphins ticket office at 1-(888) FINS-TIX (1-888-346-7849).
