When the final training camp practice came to a close, Chan Gailey after briefly addressing his team, made a purposeful walk to the stands where he admonished a small group of fans that were heckling the players, most notably Trent Edwards.
Gailey pointed right at them and said that the players would not be coming to sign autographs for them because, “If you dog one of us, you dog all of us.”
Gailey then walked away without another word.
“I just explained to them why the players wouldn’t be over there to sign some autographs for them,” he said. ”They said some things during practice that were derogatory to a couple of our players. And if you say something derogatory to one of us you say it to all of us, so I told them not to sign for that group.”
Gailey’s current starting quarterback Trent Edwards appreciated his coach’s support.
“Obviously I’m going to get some criticism,” said Edwards. “Hopefully there are more people praising me. That’s nice when you have a coach that’ll fight for you. We obviously have fans that want to win and I definitely want to win. And they’re more than willing to say what they want to say what they need to say it.
“I’m a fan of the L.A. Dodgers and they’re not playing very good baseball right now. I could probably go off on a couple of their players. I probably wouldn’t to their face, and if I did I would expect Joe Torre to come after me and say something to me. So that’s nice that I have a head coach that’ll do that, but they’re more than welcome to say whatever they want.”
Gailey did say overall the fans at training camp were great and that the team appreciated the support that they did receive during their time at St. John Fisher.
“That’s what this game is about the fans,” said Gailey. “We’re trying to play the game so that we get people excited and enthusiastic about pulling for their team. And their team is the Buffalo Bills and that’s what it’s about. That’s a big part of what we’re trying to get done, being successful for the fans.”
