The Patriots on Tuesday acquired cornerback Dante Wesley from the Bears for an undisclosed draft pick in 2008. The Patriots were thin at the position due to the season-ending knee injury suffered by Chad Scott during practice and the continued holdout of Asante Samuel. Wesley, 28, is entering his sixth NFL season and has played in 71 career regular-season games with two starts for the Panthers (2002-05) and Bears (2006).

The New England Patriots on Thursday night signed four-year veteran end Ty Warren, one of three first-round starters on their defensive line, to a new five-year contract that includes a maximum value of about $35 million and $18 million in guarantees. The new deal, confirmed by agent Vann McElroy and team sources, replaces the final two years of the original rookie contract that Warren signed in 2003 and extends the overall pact by three additional seasons, through 2011. Under the previous contract, Warren was scheduled to earn base salaries of $1.075 million for 2007 and $1.45 million for 2008. His rookie contract was for six years, with a maximum value of $20 million, and included a $3 million signing bonus and $3.25 million option bonus. Warren, 26, was the 13th overall player chosen in the 2003 draft and has emerged as one of the NFL's best and most versatile defensive linemen. Playing in the New England 3-4 front, he typically aligns as the left end on early downs and then often moves inside on passing downs. The former Texas A&M star combines -- as do most Patriots defensive linemen -- size, quickness and position flexibility. In four seasons, Warren has appeared in 63 games and started 51 contests. He has compiled 291 tackles, 13½ sacks, six pass deflections, three forced fumbles and two recoveries. He has also started in seven of his 11 postseason appearances and has 38 tackles. By retaining Warren with a new deal, the Patriots continued to emphasize the importance of keeping their top players for the long-term, particularly on the defensive line. In April 2006, the Pats signed star defensive end Richard Seymour, their first-round pick in 2001, to an extension through the 2009 season and the megadeal made him the league's most highly compensated player last year. Nose tackle Vince Wilfork, a first-rounder in 2004, is also signed through 2009
